Who must give qurbani
In the Hanafi school qurbani is wajib on every adult, sane Muslim who is not travelling and who owns wealth at the nisab level beyond basic needs on the days of qurbani. Each person who meets this gives their own qurbani; one qurbani does not cover a whole family.
Animals and shares
- Goat or sheep: one qurbani for one person. A goat must be a full year old. A sheep of six months that looks like a year-old sheep is accepted.
- Cow or buffalo: up to seven people, at least two years old.
- Camel: up to seven people, at least five years old.
- Every portion must be at least one seventh. Two to seven people can share, in equal or unequal portions, as long as nobody's portion is less than one seventh.
Dividing the meat
When partners share an animal, the meat must be divided by weighing it, not by estimating, so that no one takes more than their share. It is mustahabb to split your own share into three: for your household, for relatives and friends, and for the poor. Keeping all of it is still allowed. The skin may be used or given away, but not sold for your own benefit, and the butcher must be paid separately, not with meat or skin.
When to slaughter
From after the Eid salah on 10 Dhul Hijjah until sunset on 12 Dhul Hijjah. In villages where no Eid salah is held, it may begin from dawn on the 10th. The first day is best.
