How does the Hijri calendar work?

The Islamic calendar is lunar: twelve months of 29 or 30 days, about 354 days a year, so each date comes about 11 days earlier every Gregorian year. Its years are counted from the Hijrah of the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah, which is why they are marked AH, "after the Hijrah".

Allah says that the number of months with Him is twelve, four of them sacred (Surah At-Tawbah 9:36): Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab.

Why can the same day have two Hijri dates?

A month begins when the thin new crescent is seen after sunset. Saudi Arabia uses the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar with its own sighting announcements, and many countries follow it. India waits for the moon to be seen in India, and the young moon is often first visible there a day later, so India's date is usually one day behind. Follow the masjid or moon-sighting committee of your own community.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I convert a Gregorian date to Hijri?
Pick the date in the first box of the converter above. It shows the Islamic date by the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia, and the date India usually keeps, which is often one day behind.
Why does India often show a different Hijri date?
Each Islamic month begins when the new crescent is seen. Saudi Arabia follows the Umm al-Qura calendar, while India waits for the moon to be seen in India itself, so its date is usually one day behind.
What Hijri year is it now?
See our Islamic date today page for today's date in India, Saudi Arabia and around the world.
How do I convert a Hijri date to Gregorian?
Choose the Hijri day, month and year in the second box. The converter shows the Gregorian date that day falls on by the Umm al-Qura calendar, and the usual India date.
Is the converter exact?
For the Umm al-Qura calendar it follows the official calculation. Months that depend on a local moon sighting can move by a day, so confirm key dates such as Ramadan and Eid with your local masjid.
When does an Islamic day start?
At sunset. After Maghrib the next Islamic date has already begun; calendars and this converter change the date at midnight for convenience.
