| 30 RamadanOnly if the Shawwal moon is not seen on the 29th | Tue 9 Mar | Wed 10 Mar |
Ramadan has 29 or 30 days. If the new moon of Shawwal is seen on the evening of the 29th, Eid is the next day and there is no 30th fast.
Why is India often a day later?
An Islamic month begins when the thin new crescent is seen after sunset. Many communities follow Saudi Arabia's announcement or the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar. India waits for a sighting in India itself, and because the young moon is often first visible a day later there, the month usually begins a day later as well.
Neither way of counting is a mistake. Follow the announcement of the masjid or moon-sighting committee you belong to, and fast and celebrate with your community.
When are the last ten nights and Laylatul Qadr?
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan" (reported by al-Bukhari). The odd nights are the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th.
By the Umm al-Qura calendar, the last ten nights of Ramadan 2027 begin at sunset on Saturday 27 February, and the 27th night begins at sunset on Friday 5 March. In India these usually fall a day later: Sunday 28 February and Saturday 6 March.
Plan for all ten
No one knows which night it will be, so the best plan is to give every one of the last ten nights some extra worship: a little more Qur'an, du'a and voluntary prayer, rather than everything on a single night.
Why does Ramadan move every year?
The Islamic calendar follows the moon. Twelve lunar months come to about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan begins about 11 days earlier each year. Over about 33 years it passes through every season. Ramadan 2028 is expected to begin around Friday 28 January 2028.
How can you get ready?
Sha'ban, the month before Ramadan, begins around 9 January 2027. It is a good time to build the habit of daily Qur'an reading so it is already in place when Ramadan arrives. Our free Islamic Calendar 2027 marks every month and the white days, and you can read the Qur'an online, page by page.
The other key dates of the year are on Eid al-Adha 2027 and Islamic New Year 2027. Check today's Islamic date, or convert any date with our Hijri date converter.
