Adam: The First Prophet
The creation of the first human being and the first prophet, told from the Qur'an and the authentic hadith, with every statement referenced.
Updated 4 November 2026
This is Part 1 of Prophets of Islam, a free weekly read on the 25 Prophets named in the Qur'an. It begins with Adam (peace be upon him): the announcement to the angels, his creation from clay, and the breath of the spirit.
The book follows the Qur'an in order: the teaching of the names, the prostration and the refusal of Iblis, Hawwa, the Garden and the one tree, the whispering, the repentance, and the descent to the earth with the promise of guidance. It adds the authentic hadith on his stature, the greeting of peace, Friday, and his debate with Musa.
It keeps to what the sources state. Isra'iliyyat and other unconfirmed reports are set apart and labelled, the places where scholars differ are given briefly, and what the Qur'an and the authentic hadith do not tell us is said plainly.

Frequently asked questions
Was Adam a prophet?
Scholars count him as a prophet, citing the Qur'an saying Allah chose him and guided him (Al Imran 3:33; Ta-Ha 20:122). Whether he was also a messenger is discussed, and Nuh is called the first messenger in the hadith of intercession (Bukhari 3340).
What did Adam do wrong in the Garden?
He ate from the one tree he was told not to approach, after Shaytan whispered to him and his wife. The Qur'an says he forgot, repented, and was forgiven (Ta-Ha 20:115; Al-Baqarah 2:37).
Was Iblis an angel?
The Qur'an says he was of the jinn (Al-Kahf 18:50). Some early commentators spoke of him among the angels, and Ibn Kathir prefers that he was never an angel.
Where was the Garden and where is Adam buried?
The Qur'an and the authentic hadith do not say where Adam is buried. Scholars differ on whether the Garden was in heaven or on the earth, and the majority hold it was the Garden of the next life.
