Puberty in Islam for Boys: A Guide to Bulugh (Hanafi)
What changes when a Muslim boy reaches bulugh, explained calmly, step by step, for boys and their fathers.
Updated 4 November 2026
Puberty brings changes to the body, and in Islam it also brings a new stage of responsibility. This guide explains bulugh (reaching puberty) in plain English, in the Hanafi school: how a boy knows he has reached it, what to do after a wet dream, how to take a full bath (ghusl), and how prayer, fasting and modesty become his own duty.
It also talks about the things many boys feel but do not ask about: friends, phones, strong feelings and mistakes, and how to turn back to Allah (tawbah) when you slip.
There is a page written for fathers, a checklist to keep, and a short set of questions and answers. It is made to be read with a father, a brother or a teacher, one chapter at a time.

Frequently asked questions
At what age does a boy reach bulugh in the Hanafi school?
A boy reaches bulugh when a sign appears, such as a wet dream, and the earliest age for this is 12 lunar years. If no sign appears, he is counted as baligh at 15 lunar years.
Do I need a full bath (ghusl) after a wet dream?
Yes, if you find wetness. If you remember a dream but find nothing, ghusl is not required. The guide has a short table for doubtful cases.
When do prayer and fasting become my duty?
From bulugh, prayer and fasting are required of you personally, as they are for any adult Muslim.
What if I make a mistake and feel ashamed?
The door of tawbah (repentance) is always open. The guide explains what sincere tawbah involves and how to start again.
Is this guide only for boys?
It is written for boys, with a page for fathers. A separate guide is available for girls, in the Sisters shelf of the Library.
