Why your Hijri age is higher

The Hijri year follows the moon and is about 354 days long, roughly 11 days shorter than the solar year. So every 33 solar years or so add up to about 34 Hijri years, and your Hijri birthday comes around 11 days earlier each solar year.

Where your Hijri age matters

Islamic rulings are tied to the Hijri calendar: Ramadan, the two Eids, the zakat year and the iddah. In the Hanafi school, if no signs of puberty appear earlier, a person is counted as an adult on reaching 15 Hijri years. From then, salah and fasting are fard, which is why this date matters when you work out prayers or fasts to make up.

How accurate is it?

This calculator uses the Umm al-Qura calendar built into your browser. Countries and communities that follow a local moon sighting may be a day ahead or behind, so treat the date as accurate to within a day.

Questions

Hijri birthdays and age

How do I find my Islamic date of birth?
Enter your date of birth above. The calculator converts it to the Hijri calendar and shows the day, month and year AH, plus your age in Hijri years.
Is celebrating a birthday part of the sunnah?
No. Birthdays are not an act of worship and there is no special prayer or practice for them. Knowing your Hijri age is useful for counting obligations, and a birthday can be a good moment to reflect, make dua and give charity.
Can the date be off by one day?
Yes. The calculator follows the Umm al-Qura calendar. Where the month starts on a local moon sighting, the date may differ by a day.
Why is my Hijri age higher than my normal age?
A Hijri year is about 354 days, around 11 days shorter than a solar year. Over a lifetime those days add up, so your Hijri age gains roughly one extra year every 33 years.
At what age does salah become fard?
At adulthood (bulugh). In the Hanafi school this is when the signs of puberty appear, or on reaching 15 Hijri years if they have not appeared by then.
