Step by step

What to do when you miss a salah

How to make up a missed fard prayer (qada), the Hanafi way.

  1. 1
Make it up as soon as you can

A missed fard prayer stays a debt until it is made up. Pray it as soon as you remember or wake up.

  2. 2
    Avoid the three disliked times

Do not pray at sunrise, when the sun is at its highest (zawal) or at sunset. In the Hanafi school you can make up qada after Fajr and after Asr, as long as it is not one of those three times.

  3. 3
Pray only the fard (and Witr)

Make up the fard rak'ahs of the missed prayer and the Witr. Sunnah prayers are not made up, except the two sunnah of Fajr when made up with the Fajr fard on the same day before midday.

  4. 4
Keep the order if you missed only a few

If you have fewer than six missed prayers, pray them in order and before the current prayer, unless the current prayer's time is about to end.

  5. 5
    Make a clear intention

Intend the specific prayer, for example "the Zuhr I missed today". For many missed prayers, intend "the first Zuhr I missed" (or the last) each time.

  6. 6
Many years missed? Make a plan

Estimate how many prayers you missed and work through them steadily, for example one qada with each daily prayer. Repent sincerely; making up the prayers is part of that repentance.

Questions

Common questions

I overslept and missed Fajr. What now?
Pray it as soon as you wake up, including the two sunnah if it is still before midday. If the sun is rising at that moment, wait until it has fully risen (about 15–20 minutes).
Do I pray qada aloud or quietly?
Like the original prayer: Fajr, Maghrib and Isha aloud in the first two rak'ahs if you lead others; alone you may choose. Zuhr and Asr are always quiet.
Can I make up missed prayers in congregation?
Yes. If several people missed the same prayer they can pray it in jama'ah.
Can someone pray my missed prayers for me?
No. Each person makes up their own prayers. A person with prayers left at death can leave a bequest for fidya to be paid for them.
