Step by step

What to do when Eid comes

The Sunnahs of the day and the Eid prayer, step by step.

  1. 1
    Prepare in the morning

Wake early, take a ghusl, wear your best clothes and use perfume (for men).

  2. 2
    Eat before Eid al-Fitr

On Eid al-Fitr eat something sweet, ideally an odd number of dates, before going. On Eid al-Adha it is Sunnah to eat after the prayer, from the sacrifice if you have one.

  3. 3
Give sadaqat al-fitr before the prayer

Pay fitrana for yourself and your dependents before the Eid prayer on Eid al-Fitr, if you have not already given it during Ramadan.

  4. 4
Say the takbirs on the way

Walk to the prayer if you can, saying the takbirs: quietly on Eid al-Fitr and aloud on Eid al-Adha. Return by a different route.

  5. 5
Pray two rak'ahs with extra takbirs

After the opening takbir and thana, the imam says three extra takbirs, raising the hands each time, then recites. In the second rak'ah, after the recitation, he says three extra takbirs before going to ruku with a fourth.

  6. 6
    Listen to the khutbah

The khutbah comes after the prayer. Stay and listen, then greet one another and visit family.
