Step by step

How to pray Taraweeh

The night prayer of Ramadan, step by step, by the Hanafi school.

  1. 1
    Pray Isha first

Taraweeh begins after the fard and sunnah of Isha. Its time lasts until Fajr.

  2. 2
    Pray in pairs of two

Pray 20 rak'ahs as ten sets of two, each ending with salam. Make the intention of two rak'ahs of Taraweeh for each set.

  3. 3
    Rest after every four

After every four rak'ahs (a tarwihah) sit for a short while. There is no fixed dua for this rest; make dhikr, send salawat or read Qur'an quietly.

  4. 4
    Pray Witr after Taraweeh

In Ramadan, Witr is prayed in jama'ah after Taraweeh: three rak'ahs with dua al-qunut in the third, before ruku.

  5. 5
    At home is fine

If you cannot go to the masjid, pray Taraweeh at home, alone or with your family. Women may pray it at home.

  6. 6
Try to hear the whole Qur'an

Completing the Qur'an once in Taraweeh during the month is a Sunnah many masjids keep. If you pray alone, recite whatever you know.

Questions

Common questions

Is Taraweeh 8 or 20 rak'ahs?
In the Hanafi school, and the other three schools, Taraweeh is 20 rak'ahs, as prayed in congregation from the time of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Do women pray Taraweeh?
Yes, it is a Sunnah for women too. Praying it at home is better for them.
I arrived late and the imam is in Taraweeh. What do I do?
Pray the fard of Isha first, then join the Taraweeh. Make up the rak'ahs you missed after the jama'ah ends, before or after Witr.
Is it a sin to miss Taraweeh?
Leaving it regularly without reason is blameworthy because it is a stressed Sunnah, but missing a night is not a sin. Pray what you can.
