Sajdah tilawat: the 14 places
There are 14 places in the Qur'an where a sajdah becomes wajib on whoever recites or hears the ayah. Here is each ayah, how to do the sajdah, and what to say in it.
How to do sajdah tilawat
- Be in wudu and face the qiblah, as for salah. It is better to stand up first if you are sitting, but you may go into sajdah from sitting.
- Say "Allahu Akbar" and go into sajdah, without raising your hands.
- In sajdah, say "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" three times. You may also say the dua below.
- Say "Allahu Akbar" and rise. That is all: no tashahhud and no salam.
"I have prostrated my face to the One who created it, and gave it hearing and sight, by His might and power."
The 14 ayat of sajdah
Most mushafs mark 15 places. In the Hanafi madhab the second mark in Surah Al-Hajj (22:77) is not a sajdah of recitation, so there are 14. Tap a reference to open the ayah in our Qur'an reader.
Indeed, those who are near your Lord are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, and they exalt Him, and to Him they prostrate
And to Allah prostrates whoever is within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by compulsion, and their shadows [as well] in the mornings and the afternoons
They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded
And they fall upon their faces weeping, and the Qur'an increases them in humble submission
Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping
Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates - for him there is no bestower of honor. Indeed, Allah does what He wills
And when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Merciful," they say, "And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?" And it increases them in aversion
Allah - there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Great Throne
Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant
[David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allah]
But if they are arrogant - then those who are near your Lord exalt Him by night and by day, and they do not become weary
So prostrate to Allah and worship [Him]
And when the Qur'an is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allah]
No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]
Rulings to know
- Who must do it? Whoever recites a sajdah ayah, and whoever hears it, even without meaning to listen. Reading it only with the eyes, without saying it, does not make it wajib.
- In salah, do the sajdah straight away after the ayah, then stand and carry on reciting.
- Outside salah, it is best to do it straight away. If you cannot, for example you have no wudu, it stays due and you do it later.
- The same ayah repeated in one sitting needs only one sajdah, even if you read it several times.
- Women in their period or after childbirth do not have to do it, even if they hear the ayah.
- Recordings: many Hanafi scholars say that hearing the ayah from a recording does not make the sajdah wajib, though doing it is better. Ask a scholar you trust about your situation.
