Prophet Dawud, the Birds and the Mountains: A Free Qur'an Storybook for Kids
The story of Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him), told simply for children with pictures, a du'a from the Qur'an and a colouring page.
Updated 25 October 2026
Dawud was a young shepherd when a mighty army led by Jalut came against the believers. The believers were few, but they trusted Allah and made du'a, and with Allah's permission young Dawud defeated Jalut.
Allah then made him a prophet and a king, gave him wisdom and the holy book called the Zabur, and gave him wonderful gifts: the mountains and the birds glorified Allah together with him, and Allah made iron soft in his hands so he could make armour. The Prophet ﷺ told us that Dawud ate from what he earned with his own hands, and that his fasting and night prayer were the most beloved to Allah.
At the end there are three questions to talk about together, the du'a of the believers before the battle (2:250) in Arabic with transliteration and meaning, and a page to colour in.
How to use it well
- 1The young shepherd
Dawud looked after sheep and was brave and strong with his sling.
- 2The du'a of the believers
"Our Lord, pour patience upon us, make our feet firm, and help us" (Qur'an 2:250).
- 3Dawud and Jalut
With Allah's permission, Dawud defeated Jalut, and Allah gave him kingship and wisdom (Qur'an 2:251).
- 4The Zabur
Allah gave Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him) a holy book called the Zabur (Qur'an 4:163).
- 5The mountains and the birds
They glorified Allah together with him, evening and morning (Qur'an 38:18-19).
- 6Soft iron
Allah made iron soft for him and taught him to make armour (Qur'an 34:10-11).
- 7Working with his hands
He ate from what he earned with his own hands (Sahih al-Bukhari 2072).

How to use it
Print it and read it together, a page or two at a time. When you reach the du'a, say it slowly together and let your child repeat it. Use the "Talk about it" questions at the end, then let your child colour in the last page. It is a lovely story to read before a test or anything that feels big and scary.
