The Names of the Prophet ﷺ: From the Qur’an and Sahih Hadith
28 names and titles of the Prophet ﷺ, each with its Arabic, meaning and source.
Updated 25 October 2026
This free printable gathers the names and titles of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that have a clear source. Ten come from Sahih hadith, where he told us his names himself: Muhammad, Ahmad, al-Mahi, al-Hashir, al-‘Aqib and more. Eighteen are titles Allah gave him in the Qur’an, such as Khatam an-Nabiyyin, Siraj Munir and Rahmatan lil-‘Alamin. Each name has its Arabic, copied from the Qur’an or hadith, a short meaning and its reference. A second page gives the full hadith and verses.

Why not 99 names?
Lists of 99 or 201 names of the Prophet ﷺ are later compilations, and they differ from one another. Some of their names, such as Taha and Yasin, are disputed. This sheet keeps only the names and titles with a clear source in the Qur’an or Sahih hadith.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Prophet ﷺ have 99 names?
There is no authentic list of 99. The Prophet ﷺ named some of his names himself in Sahih hadith, and the Qur’an gives him many titles. Longer lists are later compilations.
What are the five names in Sahih al-Bukhari?
Muhammad, Ahmad, al-Mahi (through whom Allah wipes out disbelief), al-Hashir (before whom people will be gathered) and al-‘Aqib (the last, after whom there is no prophet). Sahih al-Bukhari 3532.
What do Muhammad and Ahmad mean?
Muhammad means the one who is praised again and again; Ahmad means the most praiseworthy. ‘Isa gave the glad tidings of a messenger named Ahmad (Qur’an 61:6).
Are Taha and Yasin names of the Prophet ﷺ?
Some people count them as names, but this is disputed, so they are not included here.
Is it free?
