Every fard prayer, and Witr, that is missed stays owed until it is made up. The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever forgets a prayer should pray it when he remembers. This two-page guide explains qaza namaz in the Hanafi school: what must be made up, how many rak'ahs a full day comes to, how to make the intention for a specific prayer, the times when qaza may not be prayed, and what to do if you have missed months or years. The second page is a worksheet to work out your total and a counter to tick off every prayer as you make it up.

Step by step

  1. 1
Know what must be made up: the five fard prayers and Witr
  2. 2
Make the intention for that exact prayer
  3. 3
Pray it just like the original prayer
  4. 4
    Avoid sunrise, midday and sunset
  5. 5
Work out your total and clear one day with each day

How to use it

Read page 1 once. Print page 2, fill in the worksheet, and keep it by your prayer mat. Each time you make up a prayer, tick its circle. One row is one full day.

Frequently asked questions

How many rak'ahs is one day of qaza?

Twenty: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3, Isha 4 and Witr 3. Sunnah prayers are not made up.

Can I pray qaza after Fajr or Asr?

Yes. Qaza may be prayed at any time except at sunrise, at midday (zawal) and at sunset.

Is there one prayer that makes up for all my missed prayers?

No. There is no single prayer, on the last Friday of Ramadan or any other time, that makes up for years of missed prayers. Each one must be prayed.

How do I make the intention for qaza?

Intend the specific prayer, for example "the first Fajr I missed that I have not yet made up".
