Allah has made Salah easier for the traveller. In the Hanafi school, once you set out on a journey of about 78 km (48 miles) or more, the four-rak'ah fard prayers of Dhuhr, Asr and Isha become two rak'ahs, and this shortening (qasr) is required, not optional. This guide explains when qasr starts and ends, the 15-day rule, what changes and what stays the same, and the situations travellers ask about most: praying behind a local imam, leading local people, joining prayers, missed prayers on the journey, and praying on a train, bus or plane.

Step by step

  1. 1
Check the distance: about 78 km (48 miles) or more
  2. 2
Start shortening once you pass the last houses of your town
  3. 3
Pray Dhuhr, Asr and Isha as two rak'ahs
  4. 4
Keep Fajr, Maghrib and Witr as they are
  5. 5
Pray in full once you plan to stay 15 days or return home

How to use it
