Writing an Arabic letter helps a child remember it far better than looking at it. Tracing builds the hand movements first, so that writing the letter freely comes naturally.

Each page covers one letter in four rows. First the child traces solid grey letters, then lighter ones, then dotted ones, and finally writes the letter on their own, starting from the right as Arabic is written.

The letters follow the Noorani Qaida order, so the book fits alongside a child's first Qaida lessons.

Step by step

  1. 1
    Trace the grey letters

Go over the solid grey letters slowly, following the shape.

  2. 2
    Trace the lighter letters

Trace again over the paler letters, with less help from the page.

  3. 3
    Trace the dots

Now follow the dots to make each letter.

  4. 4
    Write it yourself

Write the letter on the empty line, starting from the right, then colour the star at the bottom of the page.

How to use it

Print one page a day on A4 or US Letter paper. Use a pencil first, so mistakes can be rubbed out.

For practice that lasts, slip a page into a clear plastic sleeve and use a whiteboard marker, then wipe it clean and use it again.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the book have 29 letters?

The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters. Primers such as the Noorani Qaida teach 29 because they list the hamza separately, and this book follows that order.

Which direction should children write Arabic letters?

Arabic is written from right to left, so children start each letter on the right-hand side.

What age are the tracing worksheets for?

They suit children aged about four to eight who can hold a pencil and know some of the letters.

Are the tracing worksheets free?

Yes. They are free to download, need no sign-up, and come in A4 and US Letter sizes.
