The Qur'an in English letters

The surahs Muslims read every day, in easy English letters with the Arabic beside every ayah. Follow along, then learn to read the Arabic itself.

How to read the English letters
  • ā ī ū long vowels: hold them for two beats
  • ʿ the letter 'ayn, from deep in the throat
  • ʾ a short stop (hamzah), as in "uh-oh"
  • ḥ ṣ ḍ ṭ ẓ heavy letters, said fuller than h s d t z
  • th dh kh gh sh one sound each; a hyphen (s-h) means two separate letters
  • al- joined to the word before: say it as one flow

The Arabic is the same text as our Qur'an reader. The English letters are a guide only; a teacher will correct what letters cannot show.

English letters help you start, but they cannot show every sound of the Qur'an. Learn to read the Arabic itself with a teacher, live and online. Your first class is free.
