The Sunnah Nikah: Mehr and Walima (Hanafi)
What makes a nikah valid, the steps on the day, the mehr and the walima, with the du'as in Arabic.
Updated 25 October 2026
A nikah is simple in Islam: offer and acceptance in one sitting, two witnesses, the consent of bride and groom, and a mehr that belongs to the bride. This guide explains each of these in the Hanafi school, the steps on the day from asking the bride's consent to the du'a for the couple, the mehr (with the minimum and Mehr-e-Fatimi given in grams of silver so they keep their value), and the walima, the sunnah wedding meal. It also reminds families that demanding dowry is not from Islam, and to register the marriage.
Step by step
- 1Ask the bride's consent before witnesses
- 2The nikah khutbah
- 3Offer and acceptance in one sitting, with the mehr named
- 4The du'a for the couple, and announcing the nikah
- 5The walima, given by the groom
How to use it
Share it with both families before the wedding, so everyone knows what the sunnah asks for and what it does not.

How much is Mehr-e-Fatimi?
500 dirhams of silver, about 1,530.9 g (131¼ tola). Multiply by today's silver rate per gram to get its value in rupees.

10 dirhams of silver, about 30.6 g.
Who gives the walima?
The groom, after the nikah. It does not have to be big.
