The people of Thamud carved their homes out of the mountains, and Allah gave them gardens, springs and date palms. But they became proud and worshipped idols. Allah sent Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) to call them back to Allah, and when they asked for a sign, Allah sent them a special she-camel. They were told to share the water with her and not to harm her.

This storybook tells the story in simple sentences, one picture to a page, so young children can follow along. Children learn to thank Allah for His gifts, to be kind to animals, and to listen when they are called to do good.

At the end there are three questions to talk about together, the words of Prophet Salih from the Qur'an in Arabic with transliteration and meaning, and a page to colour in.

How to use it well

  1. 1
    The people of Thamud

They carved homes out of the mountains, and Allah gave them gardens, springs and date palms (Qur'an 26:146–149).

  2. 2
    Prophet Salih calls them

Allah sent Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) to tell them to worship Allah alone and ask for His forgiveness (Qur'an 11:61).

  3. 3
    The sign from Allah

They asked for a sign, and Allah sent a special she-camel: "This is the she-camel of Allah, a sign for you" (Qur'an 11:64).

  4. 4
    Sharing the water

The water was shared: one day for the she-camel and one day for the people (Qur'an 26:155).

  5. 5
    The warning

The most wicked of them killed the she-camel, and Prophet Salih told them they had three days (Qur'an 11:65, 91:12–14).

  6. 6
    The believers are saved

Allah's punishment came, their homes stood empty, and Allah saved Prophet Salih and the believers (Qur'an 11:66–68).
