How to Perform Ghusl Step by Step (Hanafi)
When the full bath is needed, the three fard acts, and the Sunnah way in eight steps.
Updated 25 October 2026
Ghusl is the full bath that purifies the whole body. It is fard after janabah, after menstruation and after the bleeding that follows childbirth, and it is Sunnah before Jumu'ah and on the Eids. This two-page guide explains the three fard of ghusl in the Hanafi school, the common mistakes that leave a ghusl incomplete, a note on braided hair for sisters, and the Sunnah way in order, as described by 'A'ishah and Maymunah, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ.
Step by step
- 1Wash both hands up to the wrists three times
- 2Wash the private parts and any impurity on the body
- 3Make a full wudu, leaving the feet for the end if water gathers
- 4Rinse the mouth and the nose thoroughly
- 5Pour water over the head three times, into the roots of the hair
- 6Pour water over the right shoulder three times, then the left
- 7Wash the whole body so no spot stays dry
- 8Wash the feet, if you left them
The three fard of ghusl (Hanafi)
Rinsing the whole mouth, rinsing the nose up to the soft bone, and washing the whole body so that not a hair's breadth stays dry. If any of these is missed, the ghusl is not complete.
How to use it
Read both pages once, then keep page two in a plastic sleeve near the bathroom door as a reminder until the steps come naturally.

Frequently asked questions
What are the fard of ghusl in the Hanafi school?
Three: rinsing the mouth, rinsing the nose, and washing the whole body.
Do I need to make wudu again after ghusl?
No. A complete ghusl includes wudu, so you may pray unless something breaks your wudu afterwards.
Do sisters have to undo their braids?
No, as long as water reaches the roots of all the hair (Sahih Muslim 330).
Does nail polish affect ghusl?
Yes. It stops water reaching the nail, so it must be removed first. Henna and mehndi do not.
